hey az, I'm just catching up after my little camping vacation. what a coincidence ... we had to remove furniture & pull up carpet from my study the day we left due to a big plumbing pipe leak that saturated through the wall. got the leak fixed & left fans running on the carpet. So, now we're back, the carpet's dry, but full of rust from metal file cabs that are now sitting outside waiting. I've been working on it & my hands are so sore & cracked ... I really identify with you. Got any suggestions for rust? Husband picked up another product for me to try today. we'll see. hope your project goes easier. oooh, any ideas for how to restretch it & tack it back in place? (bet you never thought you'd get questions like this on your blog, huh, maybe we could make a political metaphor out of this project) -- D.K.

I'm a very handy person, I can pull up carpet, but there is no way I would want to install new carpeting. And I've only done a little tile job. It looked great when done, but it was just a little bit, a back splash around a countertop that I had replaced the formica on for a lady.

not to be demanding or anything, but, um, did you forget "and now for some thing completely different..." :D

I enjoy your sideshow diversions, and I am a Monty Python Fan.

Rust where? To put carpet back down properly you need a carpet strecher and new tack strips.

az... Think outside of ALL the boxes Hon. You have to get way out there in space in order to do that. BTW, books are boxes, just other peoples boxes is all.

bbc, thanks for asking, but I solved the rust problem! Found a product called "Whink" Rust Stain Remover which was safe for carpets. The rust was so bad from a row of metal file cabs sitting on saturated carpet after our plumbing leak, I was sure we were going to have to rip it all out. Now....next up is stretching & retacking the carpet. I don't want to use one of those things I've seen professionals use that destroy your knee. I'm hoping the file cabs will hold it all down OK.

AZ, hope your project is going better. Are you trying to replace carpet with carpet, or something else? What a way to spend Labor Day weekend! D.K.

Oh, rust on carpet. I've never heard of Whink, I'll try to remember that. But then, I'm trying to remember what I did yesterday.

The carpet really needs to be streached, get it all ready and look for a carpet man that wants to make a few quick bucks, they are fast. I'll bet that a visit to three taverns would turn up a good carpet man, they all seem to drink.

I'm hiking to the hot springs this morning, to soak my head for a while. LOL
