is something wrong with this picture?

ok, it's not really a picture but a news article - about Calif power outages effects MYSPACE.

um, first off - why is MYSPACE not being up more important than say, the heat knocking out power to over 175,000 homes and bizs ???

and there is not mention in either newpaper article about the cause of the heat breaking temps? can we say global warming people?

i did gleen this from the article, "The combination of brutal heat and unusually strong thunderstorms befuddled many."

BEFUDDLED??? this is bordering on the absurd

and oh, while googling 'global warming' ...
i came across this on youTube <-- ministry of (mis) information?

I have no evidence for this but I suspect that in addition to global warming, our power problems are related to privitization.

I was unable to get to that YouTube video with your link. I'm very curious about your reference to it.

nona -- i fixed the link - thanks for pointing it out...

and about calif - i am reminded of the movie about enron and how they staged power brown-outs to raise prices...

AZ, I followed your link to Al Gore's penguin army video! Now here's the funny thing ... for 30-yrs my husband & I have had a little hobby of collecting penguins on any trip we take. Sometimes we have to look really hard, but eventually we manage to find a penguin to bring home. So now we have penguins of wood, soapstone, glass, brass, feathers, granite, etc etc. After we saw An Inconvenient Truth last week, we remarked how sad it would be if our little collection would be all that remains of these wonderful ice creatures in the future.

And we were living in So-Cal during that whole enron debacle! What a crock they were selling. Uh oh, you didn't build any new power plants & that explains why your elec prices just went up OVERNIGHT. hmmmm, we all wondered, we hadn't built any new power plants for decades, nothing different today from yesterday, but today our prices go drastically up? I'm so sorry to hear the whole brown-out power-grid game is still being played there. hang in there, nona. D.K.

D.K. and azgoddess: I'm so excited today. We've been wanting to go solar, but were afraid we'd have to sacrifice our lovely old growth oak trees that provide shade to our house. Today, a contractor who installs solar panels came by and says he can install the panels on stilts and our trees can stay.

We're waiting for a quote and will get one or two more quotes, before choosing someone, but we are definitely going to do it.

We will get a grid-tied system so we can sell electricity back to PG&E when we have an excess.

Our PG&E bill has been around $270 per month so a solar system will pay for itself quickly.

nona, i'm excited for you, too! What a wonderful thing if you can actually sell excess elec! We built our last house in san diego & pre-plumbed for solar hot water & furnace, but the climate was so easy, our power bills only $50-$100/mo, so it didn't pay to install the panels. (It was the water that killed us, $200-500/mo for our organic avocado grove, basically a tax shelter which I threatened every year to cut down & replace with drought-resistant calif pepper trees & native live oaks).

Around here (SW Utah), the big thing is geo-thermal, which we are definitely looking into for when we build our next home. AZ, Even though that's a few yrs away, I'm keeping a file of "green" ideas, so keep 'em coming. D.K.
